Across Mongolian Plains A Naturalist Account of China 'Great Northwest' Roy Chapman Andrews Books
This is an interesting book, but filled with the biases of a 20th century British naturalist. Today, this account would not come close to "politically correct" and would certainly offend the Mongolians -- who at present seem to worship his finding of dinosaur eggs. What can i say, he was a product of his time. Find it and remove it to Europe for the Westerners to view. I've seen the very small "canyons" in the Gobi where he found the eggs. As a tourist, it is not worth the trip. As a devotee of Roy Chapman Andrews it's ground to worship.Product details

Across Mongolian Plains A Naturalist Account of China 'Great Northwest' Roy Chapman Andrews Books Reviews
This edition looks like someone's typing homework. The Book Description says "may not include graphics or images from original edition." It should read "DOES not include ..." It has an index but no page numbers, how helpful is that? It may contain all of RCA's words, but I'll never know for sure. I give the homework a 'B' for number of keystrokes but 'D-' due to the omission of photos and map. It took over a month to be delivered.
This man was awesome! The real Indiana Jones. The things he did are legendary and the Mongolian expedition is one of his best. A great read.
Although I found the passages about the Mongolian culture and people, there wasn't enough of it. Far too much of the book entailed his hunting exploits.
Perhaps not the best book by Roy Chapman Andrews, one of the heroes of my youth in the early '50s, but it would have been much enhanced if the illustrations actually appeared instead of just being "placed." Even if the illustrations were poor quality, it would have been better than a teaser.
Roy Chapman Andrews was an adventurer, naturalist, archaeologist, historian, and just about everything you saw in Harrison Ford's portrayal of a fictional character. Andrews, though, was the real deal in a time and world now long past.
Great insight into the times and the world he explored.
I love this book. As a kid I read his books from the library and at school. I was given a for my birthday and, since we plan to visit Ulan Bator (Urga) next year, this was my first download.
It is dated, with some non-PC observations and conduct -- He enjoys hunting for fresh meat -- but the detailed descriptions are as alive and vivid as ever.
If you want a taste of life and travel 100 years ago - buy this and enjoy the rich descriptions of one of the first Indiana Jones role models.
I'm reading to prepare for a trip to Mongolia; wanting to discover it's past and present, particularly the natural history. Once you adapt to the "old-fashioned" writing style and the naturalists' period approach of collecting species, this is a great read. I expect that I will be as disappointed in finding changes in lifestyle between what he found and the nomads lifestyle adaptations to today's world. I already either like or can tolerate goat and sheep yogurt and cheeses though -- so I expect to do better in the native food department than did Mr Andrews.
